Windows
Many apartments in San Francisco have old, single-paned windows that probably leave a half inch gap when shut. These leaky openings are not only inefficient, they can also create water damage to the surrounding construction. Replacing these windows whenever possible is an obvious investment.
Double-paned windows have the potential to prevent heat from entering (or leaving), and can make apartments more energy-efficient. For our apartment kitchen remodel, we installed a Simonton double-paned window for $517 for a 3.5ft by 4ft window. This brand has a white vinyl coat, double panes, and low-E glass. Another high efficiency window is the Andersen 100 series window. With white fibrex, double panes, and low-E2, the Andersen quotes for $632.
